True, but still, according to the Centers for Disease Control, over 46 million American men and women are smokers as of 2009 (the last year they collected the data). And more of us are lighting up each year. There are plenty of good reasons to stop smoking, including avoiding lung cancer. But, for men, here’s a new powerful reason to put down that cigarette. Studies have found that cigarette smoking significantly increases your risk for erectile dysfunction. In fact, smoking may raise your risk for developing ED by 40%. Does Smoking Cause ED? The evidence that smoking causes erectile dysfunction is coming in from universities around the world. A 2005 study co-authored by researchers from Latrobe University and the University of New South Wales in Australia found that, if you currently smoke, smoking increases your risk for erectile dysfunction by 39%. How many cigarettes put you at risk for ED? It seems that 20 is a critical number. The study examined 8,367 Australian men between the ages of 16 and 59 years and found that men who smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day face a 39% higher risk for ED. Those who smoke fewer than 20 cigarettes face a 24% higher risk of erectile dysfunction. Not good. A 2007 study from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine echoed this result. The Tulane study looked at 7,684 Chinese men aged 35-74 years without clinical vascular disease. The men were asked to complete questionnaires detailing how much they smoked and whether they experienced any form of erectile dysfunction. The results were then separated into those who had never smoked, those who smoked fewer than 10 cigarettes a day, those who smoked between 10 and 20 cigarettes a day and those who smoked over 20 cigarettes a day. The results were striking. Compared to someone who has never smoked, you have a 27% higher risk for erectile dysfunction if you smoke 1 to 10 cigarettes a day. That 27%. If you smoke 11 to 20 cigarettes a day, your risk for erectile dysfunction is 45% higher. And, if you are an extremely heavy smoker—smoking over 20 cigarettes a day—you have a 95% higher risk for erectile dysfunction. In other words, if you smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day –about half a pack—your risk for having erectile dysfunction is twice as high as a guy who doesn’t smoke. What’s even more sobering about these reports is that your risk for developing ED is totally independent of whether or not you have cardiovascular disease. So, even if your smoking does not lead to heart disease, it can still cause erectile dysfunction. Bottom line is –drop the cigs if you want to keep your sex life alive and well.
