Obama's TV Ratings -What They Say About His Chances September 6, 2008 By Michael P. Delhomme, Contributing Columnist Related Links Ten Signs You Are About To Be Fired How Much Do Politicians Make? Snoring Linked to Stroke The DNC and RNC conventions drew massive TV audiences this year. In one night alone, the night he accepted the nomination as the Democratic candidate for President in Denver, Senator Barack Obama drew 38.3 million viewers, according to Nielsen data. Surprisingly, Senator John McCain did slightly better. He drew 38.9 million viewers, about 600,000 more viewers than Obama. Both the DNC and the RNC have reason to crow about the overall performance of their respective conventions. Over the 4 days in Denver, the DNC averaged 30.2 million viewers per night. The RNC averaged an even higher 34.4 million viewers per night. What do these numbers foreshadow for each candidate? We took a look at the historical TV ratings performance of Democratic and Republican candidates and compared them to the outcomes of the Presidential race. The results were somewhat surprising. In 1992 and earlier years, Nielsen did not keep track of total people watching, only total households. Since 1960, in the last 48 years, the US has had 12 elections. Democrats have won 5 of these. Of the 5 elections Democrats have won, they also won the TV ratings "race" before 4 out of the 5 times. In fact, the only Democrat in the past 50 years to lose the TV race and still capture the White House was Jimmy Carter in 1976, the election following Watergate. On the other side, Republicans have won 7 out of the past 12 elections. They won only 2 out of the 7 TV races in which they later won the Presidency. It appears that winning the TV race is far more important for the Democrat candidate than for the Republican. The 4 million additional TV viewers who watched the RNC nominate its candidates this year is by far the largest margin for Republicans since records have been kept, an ominous cloud over Democrat chances in November.
