What Is Normal Height for a Man? Related Links Ideal Weight for Men Foods That Strengthen Erectile Performance What Are Growth Plates? September 30, 2007, Last Updated June 8, 2011 By the Editors of MangoBoss Americans are getting taller. When George Washington was President, the average height of American males was 168-172 cm, about 5 feet, 6 inches tall. President Washington was considered literally a giant among men in his day, because he measured 6 feet, three and ½ inches. Antique beds made in that day were almost a foot shorter than beds today. But with changes in nutrition and improvements in health, the average height of Americans has been steadily increasing. Today, the Average height of American white males is 5 feet, 10.6 inches. The average for African American males is almost exactly the same but a little shorter at 5 feet, 10.2 inches. Even shorter are Mexicans in America, who average about 4 inches less, at 5 feet, 6.8 inches. Who are the tallest? Article Continues Below The Dutch are the tallest people in the world averaging 6 feet even. They are topped slightly by a group living in the Alps at 6 feet, 1 inch but these people belong to more than one country or do not have a distinct nationality. With improvements in nutrition, will people continue to grow taller and taller? Or is there some natural upper limit to the height of humans? None of the current studies in this field ---nutritional anthropology –seems to put the question to rest. But what appears to be the consensus is that over centuries, those of us with better nutrition tend to be significantly taller than those of us who are poorly nourished. A controversial new theory goes a lot further. According to evolutionary theorist Dr. Oliver Curry of the London School of Economics, in about 100,000 years we humans will split into two species, one tall and one short. The upper class species will be taller, more intelligent, more attractive. The lower class species will be short, slower-witted, less attractive and goblin-like. The difference will not be racial, says, Dr. Curry, because all of our descendents in 100,000 years will be a creamy coffee-color due to intermixing. |
