Eliminate Tumors in Your Prostate That Can Cause Blood in Semen Prostate tumors and cancer lead to blood in semen, although the likelihood that blood in semen means cancer is low. Experts are divided on how great an association there is with prostate cancer and hematospermia. Some experts state that malignancies account for less then two percent of cases of blood in semen. Others put the figure at much higher. A 2004 study from Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois reported that among 139 men with blood in semen, 13.7 percent were diagnosed with prostate cancer. But a 2008 study from Vera Cruz Hospital, Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil reported that out of a series of 86 men with hemospermia, only one had prostate cancer. The most common treatment for prostate cancers is innovative surgical prostate removal. The most common type of “open” prostatectomy is retropubic, which makes an incision between the navel and the pubic bone to remove the prostate and affected lymph nodes. Once the tumor is removed and the cancer contained, the hematospermia should also dissipate. 6. Treating Urethral Polyp to Rid Yourself of Hematospermia Urethral polyps are lesions that are composed of smooth muscle, small cysts, or nervous tissue. According to the American Urological Association Foundation, urethral polyps can be caused by many things - urinary tract infections, abscesses and injuries are most common. Men who suffer from urethral polyps can suffer painful and frequent urination as well as blood in both urine and semen. In order to treat this condition, the most common option is surgical removal. A minimally-invasive procedure, cystourethroscopy uses a small camera via the urethra to locate and eliminate the polyp. Once eliminated, your hematospermia should be cured. 7. Treat Cystic Dilation of the Prostatic Utricle With Surgery To Remove Hematospermia Blood in semen may also be caused by a condition called cystic dilation of the prostatic utricle. A 2005 study from the Furuya Hospital, Kitami, Japan looked at cystic dilation of the prostatic utricle in association with hematospermia. The researchers reported that 30 of the 138 men in the study with hematospermia had a midline cyst of the prostate. The primary method of treatment is transurethral unroofing (TUUR), which is a surgical procedure performed under anesthesia. 8. How Should Hematospermia After Transurethral Resection of the Prostate Be Treated? The common procedure for treating symptomatic benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) is transurethral resection of the prostate, a surgical procedure that is associated with subsequent hematospermia. In a 2006 study from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Chang Gung University, Taiwan, Republic of China 2.5 percent of the men who underwent a transurethral resection of the prostate developed hematospermia as a result. Because the blood in semen is a consequence of the surgical procedure it is harmless and will usually resolve on its own without treatment. Some experts recommend a course of the medication finasteride starting two weeks prior to the transurethral resection of the prostate procedure to reduce the risk of subsequent blood in the semen. 9. No Extra Treatment for Hemstospermia Following Prostate Cancer Treatment If you suffer blood in semen following treatment for prostate cancer you are not alone, and the blood will normally go away after a short time. According to a 2005 study from St. Vincent's Hospital, Darlinghurst, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia up to 17 percent of patients who undergo brachytherapy, a treatment for prostate cancer that involves inserting radioactive seeds into the prostate, suffer from hematospermia. No treatment is required for blood in semen as a result of this cancer treatment as the blood will go away on its own in most cases. 10. Treat Urethritis to Remove Blood in Semen Urethritis is a common cause of blood in semen, particularly in young men. Urethritis is the inflammation of the urethra, the tube that connects your bladder to the outside opening, including the end of the penis. Urethritis can be caused by a sexually transmitted infection or by the germs that produce urinary tract or bladder infections. Cranberry juice has long been considered a good treatment for bladder infections. Many experts believe cranberry juice can help flush out the germs that cause these type of urinary and bladder infections. A 2002 study from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada found that cranberry juice and cranberry tablets significantly reduced the number of bladder infections in 150 sexually active women. although the study did not include men, there is no reason to believe that the results don't equally apply to male bladders. To help cure urethritis, you can also drink plenty of fluids to lessen the pain when you urinate. Take sitz baths - a shallow warm water bath to bathe the genitals - to ease irritated areas and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications to ease the pain. When your urethritis has disappeared, so too will the blood in your semen.
